Analysis of Halloween film poster

During this lesson we had to analyse different Horror film posters. The poster below is of the film Halloween (remake) that was released in 2007 and was directed by John Carpenter. The use of colour within this poster defies the normal conventions of a Horror film and so intrigues the audience for something different.

17th June
How can independent learning help me in at A2?

What do you notice?
·         ability to plan and construct media products using appropriate technical and creative skills (AO3)
·         application of knowledge and understanding in evaluating their own work, showing how meanings and responses are created (AO2)
·         ability to undertake, apply and present appropriate research (AO4).

When comparing the highlighted words and the performance description for media studies, I have learnt that I need to be able to plan and organise my work and add key content that is expressive and accurate in my writing. I shall do this by looking at others previous work and seeing the make (grade) that they got. I will then use the key ideas that they use and apply it to my own. This will help my work to improve and hopefully contain all relevant contexts that will boost my grade. Through my work I need to show technical and creative skills, I can to this by planning different steps within my blog and show how they will adapt into my final product. To further my information within my blog I shall perform independent research to find out audience theory to the unit that we are looking at this year (Horror genre). I will show my ability to undertake, apply and present appropriate research I will use different presentation skills within my blog, this will be in the forms of Prezi, Slideshare, Audio and Video. When evaluating my work I shall use the audience/ user response to see their views and opinions towards my product.  From this I can then adapt my work according to their comments be they positive or negative.

I can show my research in different forms, this can be from definitions or certain information pages about practitioners such as Levi Strauss. Furthermore I can show the sources in which I find my information and adapt it to my own accord and understanding.
Above are the market criteria that are aimed for a B which is my target level. From this I gather that in order to reach or aim above my target grade that I need to make sure that all my work is up to date and full of information that supports my blog and the research that I am finding. I will show my planning for the different projects on my blog in order for people to see my progress and how my ideas have adapted and advanced.
I need to look at who the target audience is for the film genre Horror and how the different sub-genres attract different people. I know that for some of this research it will be harder to find the relevant information I need in order to be specific and claim the higher grades. I can also look at contrasting genres (in less detail) and compare them to the genre of Horror. By doing this there will be a clear difference of target audiences and style.
I can use story boarding in order to show the progress and adaptation of my work. It will give me a visual piece of evidence that is creative and will help to express ideas.

I will make sure that I can get enough actors and props to use in an appropriate manor by making sure that use my time appropriately and ask them in advance. This will link into my time management skills.

Codes and conventions in teen horror

http://www.slideshare.net/kbamediastudies/codes-and-conventions-in-horror-films-9488865?qid=5e48a65d-7c2e-4476-aaeb-76bd7751863f&v=qf1&b=&from_search=3

Jaws

When shown the opening five minutes of the famous film 'Jaws' by Steven Speilberg, you can see the classic codes and conventions that are associated with teen horror.
Although this clip does not show the film from the very beginning, it shows  a vital part that a lot of different conventions within a Horror film.
Five Key codes within a Horror film would be those such as:

  • Sound effects
  • Editing
  • lighting
  • How the characters express themselves and show their feelings though their actions
  •  Music
Five key conventions within a Horror film would be those such as?
  • A secluded location
  • People get separated from each other
  • Someone is killed within the first five minutes
  • Victims fall over
  • Characters are usually of a certain stereotypes
These are the main codes and conventions that I saw in the opening to the film Jaws. I think that these codes and conventions appeared within the opening to this film as they want o make the audience feel full of adrenaline and know that they are in for a Horror film. By having lots of well known techniques within the opening of the film it creates an atmosphere that keeps the audience on edge and expecting more things to happen, it keeps them interested in what is happening by making a lot happen in a short amount of time.

During this lesson I also found out the meaning of a Hybrid and Sub genre and the difference between them. A Hybrid, when talking about film media; is when two genres are mixed together. An example would be Comedy-Horror; such as Shaun of the Dead. Another would be  Rom-Com such a Bridget Jones's diary. A Sub-Genre is a when a genre is split into different categories. An example within the Horror genre would be: Slasher, Comedy, Supernatural and Teen.

Codes and Conventions

In this lesson we were asked to find the definitions of three main terms that would be important when looking at this new course.
